Laying the Foundations for Cenergist’s New Substation

At Shanco, we pride ourselves on delivering expert groundworks solutions that combine technical precision with dependable service. One of our recent projects, a collaboration with new client Cenergist, is a perfect example of this. Cenergist are an energy and water efficiency specialist who support their client in meeting net zero and sustainability goals. We were appointed by Cenergist to prepare a site for the installation of a new substation unit, carrying out a tightly coordinated programme of works that delivered high quality results on time.

Understanding the Scope of the Groundworks

The brief was to excavate and pour a concrete base, allow for the construction of brick cable trenches, and then install a top slab to support the incoming substation unit. Once the unit was in place, our team returned to complete the finishing touches, including stone levelling around the perimeter and installation of secure metal fencing.

Careful Planning and Thoughtful Execution

Before the first digger arm hits the ground, you’ve got to know what’s beneath your boots. Prior to breaking ground, one of our team members visited the site to assess conditions and identify any potential constraints. The area was checked for hidden services, manholes and obstructions, and a CAT scan survey was completed to confirm the absence of live utilities. These proactive measures helped to ensure a smooth and safe start.

Once the site was cleared, excavation began and the first concrete slab was poured. The layout for the brickwork cable trenches was marked out with precision, enabling the build to continue without the need for a site engineer visit. This efficiency is a direct reflection of the team’s experience and careful setting out.

Following the bricklaying phase, we installed formwork and poured the upper slab to complete the base structure.

Navigating Challenges on Site

As is often the case in groundworks, conditions below the surface presented a few surprises. Just 200mm into excavation, the team encountered a buried 300mm concrete slab that had to be broken out using a pecker. Once this was removed, a further issue arose when the exposed ground was found to be too soft for direct build. The team responded quickly, excavating another 200mm and replacing the material with clean Type 1 stone to ensure a reliable base for the concrete.

Despite a small and confined site, the team maintained excellent coordination of deliveries and on-site materials, keeping the project running smoothly from start to finish.

Results That Speak for Themselves

The project was completed on time and to a high standard, something that did not go unnoticed by the client. We were delighted to receive the following feedback:

“Hi Stephen, I just wanted to send you a quick note to say it was an absolute pleasure having your site team working on the substation for us up at the Depot. I found them to be great to work with and extremely professional, and they did a great job of course.”
