Shanco, operating as the Principal Contractor, was tasked with a significant project at the Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Plant. The goal was to clear vegetation and tree growth within the former Press House building, exposing the existing concrete slabs, piers, and walls for accurate surveying and assessment. The building’s age, dense overgrowth, and long period of disuse presented considerable challenges.

The Project

The project focused on removing overgrown vegetation and tree growth from the old Press House building to allow for a detailed structural assessment of the existing concrete elements. The work was necessary to facilitate future operations at the Yorkshire Water Waste Water Treatment Plant, but the condition of the building added complexity to the task.

The Approach

The Shanco team faced restricted access due to sealed doorways and windows, which made it impossible to bring in larger plant and equipment. Instead of resorting to demolition, the team devised a unique solution: utilising a 50-tonne crane to lift equipment through the roof void. This innovative plan was meticulously developed and executed with precision. Additionally, the in-house Health and Safety department ensured all operations were conducted with strict safety measures to protect the workers involved.

The Challenge

One of the main challenges was the highly restricted access within the building, as most entrances had been sealed with bricks, complicating the entry of machinery and equipment. The team could not risk demolishing parts of the structure due to concerns about the building’s integrity. This limitation required Shanco to devise a creative solution that would allow access without compromising the building.

Through careful planning and coordination, Shanco successfully implemented the crane-assisted lift, allowing equipment to be brought into the building efficiently. This approach not only overcame the access issues but also accelerated the project’s progress, saving both time and resources.
