Foundations and Drainage for New Care Home in Grimsby

For this site in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, our work involved constructing a disused piece of land susceptible to flooding to a raised platform ready to support a modern 66-bedroom care home development that aims to create over 50 employment opportunities for the area.

The Challenges

Initially, we carried out a reduced-level dig, using excess material to create a bund around the site to avoid rising water levels from a nearby dyke impacting site conditions. We subsequently arranged & coordinated CBR tests to evaluate the strength of the ground conditions. With the challenge of adverse weather in mind, we then raised the levels of the site by over 1m with clean stone, providing a suitable platform for a piling rig to work off. Using clean stone ensures any possible excess water would simply filter away, preventing a detrimental impact on the programme.

A total of 231 steel piles were then driven into the ground and we prepared and cut to the correct level. These piles penetrated the 730 linear meter reinforced ground beams, lift pit and crane base. For this project we also used Pecafil as a means of formwork; a versatile and economical alternative to the traditional timber formwork typically used.

As with most sites, there were several subcontractors involved, including a team installing a state-of-the-art heating system. With extensive planning and daily coordination meetings we were able to work alongside other subcontractors, allowing us to carry out two pump visits (pouring 165m3 of C40 concrete), the installation of an attenuation tank, and internal and external drainage, all with no impact on other subcontractors.

”I have recently worked in partnership with Shanco Contracts, who have provided the first phase groundworks for a new build care home, in Grimsby. Having run sites for over 30 years now, it has been great to work with a professional team, who are courteous, knowledgeable, well organised and above all get the job done. Lee Johnson the Site Supervisor was outstanding, I would have no hesitation in recommending Shanco.”
