Supported by our EL1-cleared workforce, Shanco quickly mobilised to deliver the foundation package for a modular laundry building at HMP Moorlands, near Doncaster, for our client PMA Services Limited.
The Project
The project involved the installation of foundations to receive a 3-bay modular laundry / welfare building within the Category C prison, as well as extensive cross-site trenching for the new incoming services.
Overcoming Challenges
The client only had a tight two week lead-time, so Shanco had to streamline its processes to meet the timeframe without compromising on the quality of work, despite the complexities involved. Without having security clearances in-hand, this would have been an impossible timescale, as the EL1 clearance required by the Establishment usually takes up to 12 weeks to secure.
Another challenge we had to overcome and adapt to was the carefully controlled gate access and designated entry times – which changed daily. Coordinating the delivery of heavy machinery, materials and concrete wagons within these constraints required meticulous planning and execution. Our experience across the justice sector helped us to plan the works effectively with our client and the Head of Security and deliver the project to plan.

The Approach
Shanco conducted thorough site surveys and engaged in meticulous planning. Every logistical detail, from the timing of the deliveries to the movement of equipment, was planned in advance to minimise disruptions to the prison’s routine operations. Shanco ensured that all its personnel underwent rigorous background checks and security training to allow for a smooth process once we were on site. The team strictly adhered to the prison’s regulations, demonstrating professionalism and reliability throughout the project.
To overcome site constraints, Shanco utilised innovative construction techniques, optimising the use of available space without compromising safety standards which was highly commended by the facility. Regular communication with the prison authorities ensured that Shanco was always aware of any changes or additional security measures. This open line of communication facilitated the smooth execution of the project.
The Results
Shanco’s expertise, coupled with their attention to detail and commitment to security, led to the successful completion of the 3 – bay modular laundry / welfare building within the stipulated time frame.
The Shanco team’s ability to navigate the stringent security protocols and logistical challenges at the CAT C Prison showcased their professionalism and dedication to quality workmanship. This project stands a testament to Shanco’s capabilities in handling complex construction tasks under the most demanding circumstances.
