Shanco delivered an on-time groundworks package for a new modular building at HMP Wymott, for client PMA Services Limited. The new office building created additional space for staff working at the prison, outside the wire.
The Project
Working in a disused concrete service yard, we sawcut, broke out and excavated for the foundations. New drainage and cable ducting was installed along a 50m trench to enable services to reach the new unit, ensuring no existing services were disturbed.

Our work area was immediately adjacent to the staff car park, so measures were put in place to prevent any disruption and maintain business as usual for the prison staff. Deliveries were tightly controlled due to the restricted space on site, and to prevent local disruption.
To enhance sustainability outcomes and reduce whole life costs, a reusable foundation system was installed. Manufactured from recycled plastic, ‘Jackpad’ is a proven alternative to traditional concrete foundations in appropriate circumstances.
The final part of the project delivered seven additional car parking spaces nearby. After breaking out the existing kerbs, Shanco carried out a reduced dig prior to installing a new reinforced concrete slab. We also installed white lining and bollards as well as an Armco barrier to protect the new modular unit.
“This was our first project for PMA (Services) and followed a recommendation from the manufacturer of the modular building. Our knowledge of modular construction ensured a quick and efficient groundworks solution, which minimised disruption and enabled the new unit to be delivered on time. “
